About Grate & Grill
An independent BBQ gear review site for the enthusiast upgrading their setup. We compare smokers and grills by the numbers — and we're honest about what we do and don't do.
Why this site exists
Most “best smoker” guides are a listicle wrapped around affiliate links. They imply a test lab that usually doesn’t exist, bury the price, and rank whatever pays best. Grate & Grill is a reaction to that. We built it for one specific person: the enthusiast upgrading a specific weakness— someone who already owns entry gear, knows what a stall is, and wants to compare the next smoker on the numbers instead of the marketing.
So every roundup here leads with a spec comparison and a live price, not a paragraph of throat-clearing. We tell you the steel gauge, the cooking area, the hopper size, and the configuration — then we do the arithmetic on what those numbers mean for how the thing actually cooks.
Who writes it
Grate & Grill is written by Stephen V., an enthusiast who’s genuinely into this. Here’s the honest version of that: I don’t have a test lab, a lab coat, or a garage full of smokers I secretly own. What I do have is a habit of reading the manuals, compiling the published specs, checking what real owners keep reporting, and doing the math — on heat retention from steel thickness, on cook time from hopper and BTU, on cost-to-run — and then saying so plainly when a product’s numbers don’t hold up.
I’m not going to tell you I’m a “long-time pitmaster” or that a panel of experts vetted every pick. One person can be genuinely curious about a lot of things; one person cannot credibly be a decades-deep authority on every category at once, and you’d be right to distrust anyone who claims otherwise.
The thing we won’t fake
Google’s quality guidelines reward first-hand experience, and the honest truth is we haven’t hands-on tested these smokers. Everyone in this category says they did. We haven’t, and we say so— because the alternative is to invent a test we didn’t run, which is exactly the kind of thing that should get a review site fired.
What we do instead is a different, fully reproducible trust signal: we compile every published specification, do the calculations in the open, cite where each number came from, and pull live prices. You can check our work. That’s the whole method, and it’s laid out on the methodology page.

How we stay independent
Grate & Grill is free to read because we earn a small commission when you buy through our links, at no extra cost to you — we’re an Amazon Associate. That commission never decides a ranking. When a cheaper option is the better buy, we say so; when we’d skip a product entirely, we tell you. The full details are on our affiliate disclosure page.
Grate & Grill is published by Type 5 Marketing LLC. Found an error in a spec, or a price that’s clearly wrong? That’s exactly the kind of note we want — tell usand we’ll fix it.
Where to start
- Best offset smokers — our driving category, ranked on steel and cooking area.
- Best pellet grills — set-and-forget wood-fired cooking, compared.
- Best kamado grills — ceramic and steel, sear and smoke in one.
- Our methodology — exactly how we pick, in plain English.
