Best Gifts for Kamado Owners

They own the egg-shaped ceramic cooker — a Big Green Egg, a Kamado Joe, or one of the look-alikes. A kamado has a short, specific list of hardware that fits it, and every item on that list is sold by size. Seven gifts that fit, what each one lets them do, and the one measurement to check before you order.

By Stephen V.Last updated Our methodology

If the cooker you’re shopping for is a thick, egg-shaped ceramic on a stand or in a cart — green, red, black, or the gray-steel look-alike — it’s a kamado, and shopping for one is a specific job. A kamado burns lump charcoal inside very thick walls, which is why it can hold a low overnight smoke on a handful of fuel and then run hot enough to bake a pizza. The hardware that fits it is a short list — something to deflect heat, something to cook on, something to hold the charcoal, a vent cap, a stone, an ash tool, a rotisserie — and every item on it is sold by the cooker’s size. That’s the whole page: seven things that fit, what each lets them do, and the one measurement to take first. Every pick is a product we already review for the cook buying it for themselves; this page explains it for you.

The one thing you must find out is which size they own, and the good news is that most people own the same one. The standard size is the 18-inch class: Kamado Joe calls it the Classic, Big Green Egg calls it the Large, and most other brands make an equivalent. Everything on this page fits that size, and several items are listed for both the Classic Joe and the Large Egg by name. If the cooker is noticeably smaller (a Joe Jr., a MiniMax, a Medium Egg) or bigger (a Big Joe, an XL Egg), the same accessories exist in those sizes but the ones linked here won’t fit. A photo with something for scale, or the model name off the badge, settles it.

The second thing worth knowing is which brand, because two picks depend on it. Kamado Joe’s current Classic II and III ship with heat deflector plates as part of the cooker, so the deflector at the top of this list would be a duplicate for those owners; it’s the first accessory for a Big Green Egg, Vision or Char-Griller AKORN owner instead. And the stainless vent cap is the Kamado Joe version — listed for the Classic, Big Joe and Konnected Joe, and the maker says it doesn’t fit Vision grills. Everything else on the list fits across brands at the 18-inch size.

If you can only learn one thing, the order to buy in is the order the list is in, because it’s a sequence rather than a ranking: deflect the heat, add a surface, manage the ash, protect the vent, then the stone (which needs the deflector under it) and finally the rotisserie for the owner who has the rest. Our full kamado accessories roundupis written for the owner and explains the sequence in more depth; the fuel — a bag of good lump charcoal is a real gift too — is on our best lump charcoal page.

On the money: every price here is fetched live and stamped with the day we checked it, and when we can’t verify one the button says “Check price” rather than showing a stale figure. If the plan was to buy a whole kamado, that’s on our pitmaster gift page— and it’s worth knowing that premium ceramics are the category that historically discounts least in November, which our Black Friday hubexplains with sources. We haven’t cooked on any of this gear; we compile the published specs and the consensus of owners, and the process is on our methodology page.

How this is funded: we earn a commission if you buy through our links, at no extra cost to you. It never changes which product we recommend, and we’ll tell you when we’d skip one, or point you to a cheaper option when it’s the better buy. Full disclosure.

The picks in full

#1The first accessory to own

Kamado Joe Half-Moon Ceramic Heat Deflector Plates, Classic (set of 2)

The accessory that turns a kamado from a grill into a smoker and an oven, and the first one to buy if your cooker did not come with one. Two ceramic half-moons sit between the fire and the food so heat travels around it instead of straight at it. The halved design is the point: run both plates for a fully indirect chamber, or one plate for indirect on one side and live fire on the other, which is how you finish a rack of ribs and sear a steak on the same fire.

For the gifter
Why it lands:
Two ceramic half-moons that sit between the fire and the food, so heat goes around the meat instead of straight at it. It's what turns a kamado from a grill into a smoker and an oven, and because they're halves, they can run one side indirect and the other over live fire on the same cook.
Who it suits:
A Big Green Egg, Vision or Char-Griller AKORN owner whose cooker didn't come with a deflector. A gift they'll use on every long cook.
Check before you buy:
If they own a Kamado Joe Classic II or III, skip this — those ship with deflector plates already (Kamado Joe's Divide & Conquer system). For everyone else, the Classic size fits the Large Big Green Egg and other round 18-inch cookers; confirm the cooker isn't a smaller or larger size.
What the numbers say
  • Two half-moons give you a full indirect chamber or a split indirect/direct fire
  • Kamado Joe lists the Classic size as fitting the Large Big Green Egg and other round 18-inch charcoal grills, not just its own cookers
  • Ceramic, so it stores and re-radiates heat rather than just blocking it
Worth knowing
  • Redundant if you own a Classic Joe II or III — Divide & Conquer already includes deflector plates
  • Kamado Joe publishes no dimensions or weight for these, so check your firebox ledge before ordering
  • Ceramic cracks under thermal shock: no cold water on a hot plate, ever

Best for: Big Green Egg, Vision and AKORN owners who need deflection

Specs read from Kamado Joe published Half-Moon Deflector Plates (Set of 2) product page (kamadojoe.com) + Amazon listing (B00MV9YRKM), last checked September 1, 2026. Prices change; the number in the card is fetched live.

#2The breakfast upgrade

Kamado Joe Half-Moon Cast Iron Reversible Griddle, Classic

A kamado's stainless grate is good at bars of sear marks and bad at everything that would fall through it. This is the fix: a cast-iron half-moon that drops into the same tier as the grate, smooth side up for eggs, smashed burgers and shrimp, ribbed side up for grate marks on a steak. Because it covers half the circle, the other half stays open grate — you are adding a cooking surface, not swapping one out.

For the gifter
Why it lands:
A cast-iron half-moon that drops in where the grate sits: smooth side up for eggs, smashed burgers and shrimp, ribbed side up for grate marks on a steak. It covers half the circle, so the other half stays open grate — they're adding a surface, not swapping one out.
Who it suits:
The kamado owner who's said they wish they could do breakfast or smash burgers on it. Anyone who cooks small things that fall through a grate.
Check before you buy:
Sized for the 18-inch Classic cookers and the Large Big Green Egg. It's bare cast iron, so it needs oiling and drying after use or it rusts — a cook who already looks after a cast-iron skillet won't blink; one who doesn't may. Heavy to move when hot.
What the numbers say
  • Reversible: a flat griddle on one face, a ribbed searing surface on the other
  • Cast iron holds far more heat than the stock stainless grate, so it recovers between batches
  • Half-moon shape leaves the other half of the grate free for open-fire cooking
Worth knowing
  • Kamado Joe publishes no weight or thickness for it, and cast iron this size is heavy to move hot
  • Bare cast iron: it needs oiling and drying or it will rust, unlike the stainless grate it sits next to
  • Costs more than a generic 18-inch half-moon griddle that does roughly the same job

Best for: Smash burgers, breakfast and anything that falls through a grate

Specs read from Kamado Joe published Half Moon Cast Iron Reversible Griddle product page (kamadojoe.com) + Amazon listing (B00MON188E), last checked September 1, 2026. Prices change; the number in the card is fetched live.

#3The overnight-cook fix

onlyfire Stainless Steel Charcoal Ash Basket (8537)

A charcoal basket is the cheapest fix for the one thing that actually ruins long kamado cooks: ash smothering the fire and choking the bottom vent. The basket lifts the coals off the firebox floor so ash falls clear and air reaches the fuel from underneath, and at the end of the cook you lift the whole thing out, shake it, and pour the unburned lump back in instead of picking it out of a gray pile.

For the gifter
Why it lands:
The thing that ruins long kamado cooks is ash smothering the fire from below. A stainless basket lifts the coals off the firebox floor so ash falls clear and air reaches the fuel, and at the end they lift the whole thing out, shake it, and pour the unburned charcoal back in instead of picking through a gray pile.
Who it suits:
The kamado owner who does overnight cooks, or who complains about cleanup and wasted charcoal.
Check before you buy:
This one is sold by diameter and the maker lists several sizes with near-identical names. This 14.37-inch basket is listed for the Large Big Green Egg, Kamado Joe Classic series, Vision, Grilla Kong and Pit Boss K24 — confirm the model, or measure the firebox opening.
What the numbers say
  • Lifts coals clear of the ash bed, so airflow does not die halfway through a long cook
  • Makes reusing unburned lump a shake rather than an excavation
  • onlyfire publishes real dimensions for it — 14.37 in across, 6.88 in tall — which most basket sellers do not
Worth knowing
  • The claimed fuel saving is onlyfire's own figure, not something we or anyone independent measured
  • onlyfire sells several sizes with near-identical listing titles — measure your firebox and match the diameter before ordering
  • Takes up firebox volume, so a full load holds slightly less charcoal than the bare firebox would

Best for: Overnight cooks and anyone tired of digging out ash

Specs read from onlyfire published 8537 charcoal ash basket product page (onlyfire.com, model F-GCG8537-RS1) + Amazon listing (B07C9ZGVVZ), last checked September 1, 2026. Prices change; the number in the card is fetched live.

#4The small gift with an outsized effect

SmokeWare Stainless Steel Vented Chimney Cap (Kamado Joe)

The stock top vent is the part of a kamado most likely to annoy you: cast or porcelain, it seizes, flakes and fills with rain. This 304-stainless cap replaces it, vents out of the sides so water runs off instead of in, and keeps its setting when you shut the cooker down in weather. It is a small upgrade with an outsized effect on whether you can walk away from an overnight cook in the rain.

For the gifter
Why it lands:
The stock top vent on a kamado is the part most likely to annoy its owner: it seizes, flakes and fills with rain. This stainless cap replaces it, vents out of the sides so water runs off instead of in, and holds its setting in weather. It's the difference between walking away from an overnight cook in the rain and not.
Who it suits:
Kamado Joe owners especially, and anyone whose top vent has started to stick.
Check before you buy:
Listed for the Kamado Joe Classic, Big Joe and Konnected Joe. The maker says plainly it does not fit Vision grills, and this listing is the Kamado Joe version, so treat it as a Kamado Joe gift unless you've confirmed the fit.
What the numbers say
  • 304-grade stainless, so it will not flake or corrode the way a painted or porcelain cap does
  • Side-vented, which keeps rain out of the chimney without closing off airflow
  • Drops straight in as a replacement for the daisy wheel and porcelain cap
Worth knowing
  • SmokeWare states plainly that it does not fit Vision grills — check your model first
  • Metal, so it gets genuinely hot; you adjust it with the rubber tab or a glove, not bare fingers
  • SmokeWare publishes no dimensions, weight or warranty figure for it

Best for: Overnight cooks, rain, and a top vent that has started to seize

Specs read from SmokeWare published Chimney Cap for Kamado Joe product page (smokeware.com) + Amazon listing (B0DTV8DXFM), last checked September 1, 2026. Prices change; the number in the card is fetched live.

#5The pizza night

Kamado Joe 15-inch Ceramic Pizza Stone

A kamado is already the closest thing most people own to a wood-fired oven — thick walls, a domed roof, and enough top-end heat to bake a pizza in minutes. The stone is what makes the floor of that oven work: heavy ceramic that holds heat and pulls moisture out of the base so the crust crisps instead of steaming. It only works over a heat deflector, which is why this is the second ceramic accessory to buy, not the first.

For the gifter
Why it lands:
A ceramic kamado is already the closest thing to a wood-fired oven most people own; the stone is what makes the floor of that oven work. Heavy ceramic that pulls moisture out of the dough so the base crisps instead of steaming. It turns a grill into a pizza night, which is a gift the whole household gets.
Who it suits:
Any 18-inch-class kamado owner who hasn't already gone down the pizza road. Pairs perfectly with the deflector above if they don't own one.
Check before you buy:
Fifteen inches across, for the Classic-size cookers and the Large Big Green Egg. It has to sit over a heat deflector or the base scorches — if they don't own a deflector, buy the pair. Ceramic stains and can crack if a hot stone meets cold water; that's normal, not a defect.
What the numbers say
  • Heavy ceramic evens out the fierce heat coming off a kamado fire
  • Absorbs moisture from the dough, which is what separates a crisp base from a soggy one
  • A published 15 in diameter — a spec most stone sellers leave vague
Worth knowing
  • Needs a heat deflector underneath or the base scorches before the top is done — budget for both
  • Kamado Joe publishes no thickness or weight for it
  • Ceramic stains permanently and can crack on thermal shock; it never really looks new again

Best for: Pizza, flatbread and anything you would bake on a hearth

Specs read from Kamado Joe published Ceramic Pizza Stone product page (kamadojoe.com) + Amazon listing (B003EV6MI6, Model KJ-PS23), last checked September 1, 2026. Prices change; the number in the card is fetched live.

#6The stocking stuffer

Dracarys BBQ Ash Tool Poker, 18 in

Sixteen dollars of bent stainless that solves a problem no amount of technique will: ash builds in the bottom of a kamado, chokes the lower vent, and the cooker slowly stops holding temperature. The flattened head reaches through the bottom vent and rakes the ash out into a pan without you lifting the firebox. It is the least interesting accessory on this page and one of the two you will use most.

For the gifter
Why it lands:
Eighteen inches of bent stainless that reaches through the bottom vent and rakes the ash out into a pan, so the cooker holds temperature and they never have to dismantle the firebox to clean it. The least glamorous thing on this page and one of the two they'll use most.
Who it suits:
Every kamado owner, full stop. If they already have one, they'll want a second by the other cooker.
Check before you buy:
The head is 2 inches wide, so on a small kamado — a Joe Jr., a MiniMax — check that the bottom vent opening is wider than that. On any Classic-size or Large cooker it just works.
What the numbers say
  • Reaches the ash through the bottom vent, so no dismantling the firebox to clean up
  • 18 in of stainless keeps your hand well clear of a still-warm cooker
  • Costs less than a bag of lump charcoal
Worth knowing
  • The head is 2 in wide — check the vent opening on a Joe Jr., MiniMax or other small kamado before ordering
  • Dracarys publishes length and head width but no weight or gauge
  • It rakes; it does not vacuum. Fine ash still wants a shop vac once a season

Best for: The clean-out job every kamado needs and no grill tool does

Specs read from Dracarys published ash tool product page (mydracas, 18 in length / 2 in head width) + Amazon listing (B071FJ1R32), last checked September 1, 2026. Prices change; the number in the card is fetched live.

#7The big one

Burly Grill Rotisserie Kit for 18-inch Kamado Grills

The one accessory here that changes what the cooker can do rather than how well it does it. A ring lifts the dome and gives you a rotisserie chamber inside a sealed ceramic, which is a genuinely different animal from a rotisserie over an open gas grill: the heat comes from a small charcoal fire and the dome holds the smoke in around the bird. With Kamado Joe's own JoeTisserie no longer sold on Amazon, this is the complete kit worth having — ring, spit rod, two forks and a 120V motor in one box, for a fraction of what the branded version cost.

For the gifter
Why it lands:
A ring lifts the dome and gives them a rotisserie chamber inside sealed ceramic — a slowly turning bird or porchetta bathed in charcoal smoke, which is a different thing from a spit over an open gas grill. Ring, stainless spit, two forks and a motor in one box: nothing else to buy. It's the accessory that changes what the cooker can do.
Who it suits:
The kamado owner who has everything else on this page. The gift they'll bring up at the next cookout.
Check before you buy:
Fit is everything: listed as a no-modification fit for the Large Big Green Egg and the 18-inch Kamado Joe Classic. Confirm the model before ordering. It needs a 120-volt outlet within reach of the grill, it's rated to 20 pounds of food, and the ring comes off for ordinary cooking.
What the numbers say
  • Complete kit — ring, stainless spit rod, two forks and a 120V motor, nothing else to buy
  • Turns a sealed ceramic into a smoke-filled rotisserie oven, not just a spinning spit over fire
  • Listed as a no-modification fit for the Large Big Green Egg and the 18-inch Classic Joe
Worth knowing
  • Rated to 20 lb of food, so it is a bird-and-roast tool rather than a whole-pig one
  • Needs a 120V outlet within reach of the grill, which not every patio has
  • The ring has to come off for ordinary cooking, so it is a set-up-and-tear-down accessory, not a permanent fitting

Best for: Whole birds, porchetta and the upgrader who has everything else

Specs read from Burly Grill rotisserie kit Amazon listing (B0GS28KL34) — published feature bullets and item dimensions, last checked September 7, 2026. Prices change; the number in the card is fetched live.

Pairings that make sense

  • The pizza kit:the deflector and the stone. The stone doesn’t work without a deflector under it, so for a Big Green Egg or Vision owner who has neither, this is the only way to give the stone.
  • The overnight kit: the charcoal basket, the ash tool and the vent cap (for a Kamado Joe). Everything that makes a twelve-hour cook something they can walk away from, in weather.
  • The breakfast kit: the cast-iron griddle and a pair of gloves from our under $50 page— the griddle is heavy to move hot.

What we’d skip for a kamado owner

A chimney starter that’s bigger than the firebox — if they don’t own one, the compact size on our chimney roundupis the right one, not the full-size. Briquettes, because kamado cooks burn lump and briquettes leave far more ash in a cooker that hates ash. A grill cover without the exact model, because covers are cut to the cooker and the cart. And any accessory listed only as “universal” with no size — on a kamado, nothing is universal.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best gift for a Big Green Egg owner?

A pizza stone, if the Egg is the Large size, or the heat deflector if they don't already own one — the stone needs the deflector underneath, so for an owner with neither, buy the pair. The charcoal basket and the ash tool are the practical picks for someone who does long cooks. The stainless vent cap on this page is the Kamado Joe version, listed for the Classic, Big Joe and Konnected Joe only, so skip that one.

What is the best gift for a Kamado Joe owner?

The stainless SmokeWare vent cap — it replaces the stock top vent that seizes and fills with rain, and it's listed for the Classic, Big Joe and Konnected Joe. After that, the charcoal basket, the cast-iron griddle or the pizza stone. Skip the heat deflector: Classic II and III owners already have plates as part of the Divide & Conquer system.

How do I know what size kamado they have?

Most people own the standard 18-inch class — Kamado Joe calls it the Classic, Big Green Egg calls it the Large. Every pick on this page fits that size. If the cooker is clearly small (a Joe Jr. or MiniMax) or clearly big (a Big Joe or XL Egg), the same accessories exist in those sizes but the ones linked here won't fit. The model name is on a badge on the cooker, or a photo with something for scale will tell you.

Do kamado accessories fit across brands?

At the 18-inch size, mostly. Kamado Joe lists its Classic-size deflector, griddle and pizza stone as fitting the Large Big Green Egg and other round 18-inch cookers, and the charcoal basket and rotisserie are listed for both by name. The exception is the vent cap, which in the version we link is listed for Kamado Joe cookers only and, per the maker, does not fit Vision grills.

Is a whole kamado a good gift?

For the right cook, it's the one cooker that does everything, but it's 188 pounds of fragile ceramic that ships without a cart at the price we list, so plan the delivery. Our pitmaster gift page covers it. And unlike pellet grills and gas grills, premium ceramics have historically discounted very little in November — the Big Green Egg in particular is sold through dealers under a strict pricing policy — so there's little reason to wait for Black Friday on this one.
